Language Happens Everywhere
Communication skills grow through meaningful, everyday interactions. The portable A-frame allows educators to model language where students are already learning, playing, connecting, and making choices.
Educators can model words while real activities and conversations are happening—not only during structured instruction.
Students, peers, teachers, and families can use the same visual vocabulary to build understanding and participation.
Designed in Each Language
The English and Spanish boards may share a visual foundation, but they are not copies of one another. Each board was independently organized around the vocabulary, grammar, and communication patterns of its language. That distinction is essential for creating an AAC tool that feels natural to the people using it.
The English board reflects the words and grammatical structures English speakers use to build meaningful messages throughout the day.
The Spanish board reflects how Spanish speakers naturally combine pronouns, verbs, articles, possessives, gender, and agreement.
A translated label does not automatically create a linguistically appropriate communication system. Languages differ in grammar, frequency, word forms, sentence construction, and the ways speakers express relationships between ideas.
The most useful and frequently occurring words are not identical across languages.
Spanish uses gender, agreement, and word forms that do not map directly onto English.
Each layout must support the way speakers naturally combine words in that language.
Thoughtful placement helps users find vocabulary efficiently and build fluency through repeated use.
The Smarty Symbols Standard
This is not one board translated into another language. It is one inclusive product containing two carefully developed communication systems—each designed to respect the language and the people who use it.
Purpose-Built Portability
The communication system is only effective when people can reach it. This professional A-frame transforms two expert-designed language boards into a portable, freestanding communication station that can be placed exactly where interaction is happening.
The English and Spanish systems are displayed on opposite sides, giving each language a complete, dedicated communication surface.
An internal cavity can hold up to 10 pounds of sand or water, adding stability on blacktops, walkways, and other flat surfaces.
The folding structure and molded carrying handle make it easy for staff to move communication access between school spaces.
The 24 × 36-inch, 3 mm plastic inserts are designed for frequent use and can be replaced without replacing the entire frame.

Product and Language FAQs
Learn how the two language systems, portable frame, customization process, and school purchasing options work together.
Not without compromising the quality of the communication system. A Spanish core board should not be created by placing Spanish translations underneath the words on an English board. Core vocabulary, grammar, pronouns, articles, word forms, and sentence patterns function differently in each language.
Smarty Symbols therefore provides English and Spanish with their own complete, independently organized sides. This protects readability, preserves consistent symbol placement, and gives each language the space needed to function as a natural communication system.
The most frequently used words are not identical across languages. Spanish also includes grammatical distinctions such as gender and agreement, along with language-specific pronouns, articles, possessives, and verb patterns.
Each board must be designed around how speakers naturally construct messages in that language. Translation is part of the process, but it cannot replace language-specific vocabulary selection and organization.
The A-frame presents the complete English Core Communication Board on one side and the complete Spanish Tablero de Comunicación on the opposite side. Each panel includes core vocabulary, questions, actions, descriptions, social words, an alphabet, numbers, and clear yes-and-no responses.
